Betz Family LaCoteRousse Syrah RedMtn (14.8%; www.BetzFamilyWinery.com) Redmond/WA 2005: Dark color w/ some bricking; rather earthy/dusty slight funky/musty/dishwater that clears slight WAState Syrah/plummy rather unattractive nose w/ little fruit; soft bit tangy/metallic rather earthy/dusty slight plummy/WAState Syrah bit dishwater/funky flavor w/ modest bitey tannins; med.long finish mimics flavor; not oxidized or over-the-hill but just has not evolved into anything of interest and a real paucity of fruit.

Hearthstone 60% Grenache/40% Syrah PasoRobles (14.8%; www.HearthstoneVineyard.com) HearthstoneWnry/SantaMaria 2003: Med.dark w/ considerable bricking; rather earthy/dusty/musty/Kansas attic slight jammy/Grenache rather tired/dried out little fruit nose; soft/fat no fruit very metallic/tangy quite dried-out flavor w/ light metallic tannins; pretty tired/dried-out red that's dead & gone. $27.00 (LA)
