WTN: Two Natural White Wines....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Oct 02, 2023 5:03 pm

I tried these two new Natural white wines this weekend:
1. Tetramythos Sideritis Nature PGI: Peloponnese (11%; U; GoatboySlctns/NY) Tetramythos/Ano Diacopto/Greece 2021: Deep amber color; rather phenolic/resiny/skin-contact slight funky/natty bit earthy/orangey/haymow/herbal slight floral/dandelions somewhat strange not very attractive nose; rather tart/tangy quite sour quite earthy/resiny quite funky/natty no fruit slight orangey quite wet dog fur/goat pen some oxidation quite unpleasant/unclean flavor w/ long dreadful finish that mimics the flavor; dreadful/undrinkable stuff; slightly better the next day but still not very attractive & somewhat washed out. $26.00 (KK)
______________
2. Ca N'Estruc Muscat Natural Dels Vessants de la Muntanya de Montserrat (12%; Llaurador Wines; No added SO2) Esparreguera/Spain 2021: Med.yellow very cloudy color; some light muscatty rather earthy/funky/natty/unclean some dishwater/swamp water unpleasant nose; soft off-dry rather sour quite unclean/natty/funky/earthy light muscatty/bitter unpleasant flavor; med.long soft quite sour light muscatty/earthy/bitter some metallic rather natty/unclean/funky rather unpleasant finish; a pretty dreadful/natty wine; a bit more palatable the next day at room temperature but still pretty natty/funky. $27.00 (KK)

More gikkerstrik from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Sideritis: A pink-skinned grape grown mostly in the North Peloponnese. Often blended w/ the Roditis grape variety.
This was a distinctly unpleasant wine w/ some natty/goaty character. Never had a wine from GoatBoy Slctns before but it's clear they know their goats well when it comes to wine.
_______________
2. Muscat: This has the classic natty/unclean character that you find a lot in the Llaurador wines. These wines used to be labeled under Jose Pastor Slctns & Llaurador did their selection of natural wines only. Now the label indicates the importer to be Llaurador Wines w/ the JosePastor Slctns as an underscript. What this change in labeling is indicative of is not at all clear and the JosePastor National Marketing guy refuses to answer my inquiring e-mails.
_______________
3. These two are exactly the kind of wines that give Natural wines such a bad name. Both wines went down the drain.

Is so-called Natural Wine the anti-vax movement of the wine world? It seems silly to turn one's back on technological progress in winemaking. It's not as if using sulfites as a disinfectant is some modern abomination. It's been common practice for centuries.

I would not label the natural wine movement as the anti-Vax counterpart in the wine business. To many folks in the natural wine movement, it is more of a religious movement than anything. It gives them sort of a sanctimonious feeling to make those wines.
There are some natural winemakers who have no compunction against using SO2, though in small amounts. SO2 is a by-product of the oil refining business. So it, therefore, is not "natural". But some insist that SO2 is permitted if the sulfer is "natural" and harvested out of active volcanoes.
But natural do not have to be funky/mousey/natty. There are plenty of good/competent natural winemakers out there. Elisabetta Foradori is one of the best examples. Martha Stouman. Clay Brockway. A bunch. But to them, it's just an alternate, more authentic, way to make wine. It's not a religious experience.
