- 2019 Rhys Pinot Noir Mt. Pajaro Vineyard - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (9/29/2023)
From one of those wonderful 500ml futures bottles, this was shockingly good for such a young wine. This very well may have caused me to guess young, ripe vintage Gevrey Chambertin if served blind. The earthy depth and firm tannins were the crossover elements, and had me wishing the 500 was a 750. It’s been a long, twisty road with Rhys Pinots. Going back to 2006 there has always been a ton of promise. The frustration has been that the payoff was always just out of reach. This wine allows my fingertip to touch the grail, even if it’s still too far to fully grasp.
