WTN: Selbach-Oster Riesling skin-contact '21....(short/borin

by TomHill » Tue Sep 19, 2023 4:35 pm

Tried this new wine over the weekend:
1. Selbach-Oster Oh Mein Gott Rielsling trocken skin-contact Mosel Q (12.5%; A.P.Nr. 2 606 319 026 22; Skin contact: 3 weeks; SkurnikWines/NY) Weingut Selbach-Oster/Zeltingen/Mosel 2022: Deep orange/burnished bronze color; fairly strong VM/skin-contact/phenolic/resinous slight orangey/honeyed slight floral/R/mango/marigolds/bit pungent slight honey grahams bit earthy very slight Mosel valve oil some complex interesting nose; quite tart/tangy rather hard/tannic/tangy strong VM/phenolic/resiny very slight Mosel valve oil/R/mango/floral strong honeyed/honey grahams/orangey rather savory/saline/austere/hard/tannic flavor w/ ample bitey tannins; very long austere/tannic finish that mimics flavor; totally dominated by the VM/phenolic quite austere/tannic w/ only suggestions of Mosel R; not very attractive now and kinda painful to drink; I suspect it will be an outstanding VM w/ 4-10 yrs of age; kinda on the pricey side. $55.00 (SFW&S)

1. This is the first German VM/skin-contact R I can recall having. It kinda hurts to drink now, but I suspect it will be a beautiful VM with some age.

Tom, what does VM stand for? Obviously not Virtual Memory or Virtual Machine. :)

Paul,
It stands for Vino or Vini Macerati. This is a term BobbyStuckey coined in his book on Friuli for skin-contact
white wines. Mostly people use the term "orange" or "amber" wines. Bobby's term is more accurate in that many VM wines
are not really orange/amber in color but can be near colorless.

Thanks Tom. I agree--it's a more precise term than orange wine.

Precise if generic. It does not give any insight as to the wine.

I had never heard of this. Listed on Skurnik site as OMG trocken.
It might be more "precise", but using a term (actually abbreviation for a term!) that no one else uses seems a bit obfuscated. I don't think anyone into wine is confused by either skin contact or orange. White, red, and rose can also be imprecise.

The only people who use the VM term are Bobby Stuckey and Tom Hill.

Well.....at least, David, I'm in good company. Something that's not always the case on WLDG!!!

It's all fine Tom, but every time you use VM it prompts the same question - here and over on Berserkers. It just seems counterproductive to use a term that only a tiny group of people understand.

Especially using Italian to describe a German wine on an English-language site. Why not just saying macerated wine (of course, that would apply to reds too, no matter which language)

Well, David....if I continue to use ViniMacerati....I'm confident it will one day become a part of the wine vernacular.
It's just a term that resonates with me.
Do you have any idea how long it took my DollyParton Viognier (or DP Viognier) to make it into the wine vernacular?

The more important question is when does "Dolly Parton Viognier" get removed from the vernacular? Unless you mean Viognier that provides books to children.

I have no problem with wine jargon, or abbreviations for same. But if you're using an obscure term, or trying to introduce/promote a new one, it helps to spell out the term, with the abbreviation in parentheses, the first time it appears in your tasting note. Then you can use the abbreviation freely after that. The purpose of a tasting note, after all, is to convey information about your experience drinking the wine.
