- 2017 Desire Lines Riesling Cole Ranch - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County (9/13/2023)
In 2020 I wrote that this wines was a cross between a German Riesling Feinherb and an Austrian Riesling Smaragd. Three years later it’s much closer to the Feinherb model, and in fact that is exactly what my guest said when I served it to them blind. I suspect I might have guessed the same thing. The balance, fruit expression and palate weight are dead ringers for Feinherb Spätlese. It’s uncanny. The California sunshine takes the fruit in a peachy, Nahe-esque direction. Still very youthful, so I wish I had a bunch more bottles. Oh well.
