WTN: Morgat Savennières Fidès evolves to surprise me

by Rahsaan » Sun Sep 10, 2023 9:57 am

Very interesting experience with 2014 Eric Morgat Savennières Fidès over the weekend. When I opened it on Friday, it was a bit dull/boring. It was certainly something to respect, with its combination of broad power and elegant polish, but the flavors tilted a bit too close to boring apples and it didn’t have much verve. I figured maybe it was fading way past its prime.

So I did not have high hopes when I poured another glass on Saturday. But then much to my surprise it had gained focus. The flavors now tasted more like the Savennières chenin you would seek: golden, fruity, nutty and floral all in the right proportions. And the texture had sharpened up with more of the waxy tactile notes, to add interest to the overall frame. This was a very nice wine.

Lovely to be surprised that way!

Interesting that a 2014 would even start with that apple note. Such a bright, fresh vintage in the Loire. Maybe it was just upset about being left in the bottle for that long. ;)

Could be where my language precision fails. First day wasn't the apple juice malic note that completely turns me off and is usually a sign of bad things to come (in my book). Rather it was more generic orchard fruits (maybe hinting apple, although choose your fruit), but without the distinction or verve that came on day 2.

Really makes me wonder if these are long haul wines.
