WTN: Four Forlorn-Hope Reds.....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Aug 31, 2023 2:26 pm

We tried these four last night at Pig+Fig:
1. Forlorn-Hope odb Trousseau RorickHeritageVnyd/CalaverasCnty/SierraFoothills (12.97%) Murphys 2020: Rather pale near rose color; lovely very perfumed/aromatic quite strawberry/Trousseau some earthy/dusty/OV bit rustic/Jura-like some complex nose; quite tart/tangy very floral/strawberry/Trousseau rather earthy/rustic/slightly coarse rather hard/austere flavor w/ ample tannins; a very pretty nose but rather hard on the palate & needs more age; shows a bit of a rustic character of a Jura Trousseau.

2. Forlorn-Hope The Kerrigans Carignane PoorRanch/MendoCnty (192 cs; 12.26%) Napa 2016: Med.dark color; strong black cherry/Carignan/blackberry rather earthy/dusty/OV some toasty/oak some complex classic Carignan nose; very tart/tangy very tannic/hard/austere strong black cherry/blackberry/Carignan very rough/rustic/somewhat coarse flavor w/ ample hard/chewey tannins; very long Carignane/black cherry/bit Zin-like finish that mimics flavor; rather attractive Zin-like aromatics but pretty brutal on the palate & badly needs more age. $30.00

3. Forlorn-Hope Sogni della Speccia Sangiovese/SolanoCnty (13.63%; 77 cs) Murphys 2014: Med.light color w/ some bricking; slight earthy some cherry/Sangio/bit Chianti-like light pencilly/oak bit complex nose; very tart/tangy/acidic light cherry/Sangio bit rustic/Chianti-like/rough somewhat coarse rather lean/austere flavor w/ strong lean/angular tannins; a pleasant enough Sangio nose but pretty fierce tannins on the palate; hurts to drink; not sure it has the fruit to make aging to soften the tannins worth doing. $42.00

4. Forlorn-Hope MilAmores DeWittVnyd/AmadorCnty RW (14.5%; 52 cs; Touriga Franca/Tinta Roriz/Tinta Amarela/Tinta Cão) 2008: Dark color; very strong bit Port-like/blackberry/boysenberry/ripe some briary/Amador Zin-like some toasty/oak bit black cherry pretty classic ripe/ShenandoahVlly/briary some complex very attractive nose; lightly tart slight hot/alcoholic strong blackberry/boysenberry/briary slight Port-like some ShenandoahVlly Zin-like rather ripe slight complex flavor w/ modest smooth tannins; very long/lingering ripe/ShenandoahVlly/briary/blackberry/boysenberry/Zin-like bit Port-like some complex finish w/ modest tannins; still fairly youthful in character but the tannins have abated. $40.00

More gibblefark from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Matt tends to make his reds on the hard/structured/rather lean side that needs some age. This MilAmores was one of the better F-H aged reds I've had. It's still rather youthful & will go another 5-8 yrs I suspect.
