How about a sparkling wine tonite!!

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Sun Aug 27, 2023 12:34 am

Tasting last night, "Sparkling wines from around the world". Have to say I thought the first wine (of 7) served was the best....NV Bisci Verdicchio Metellica Extra Brut. $37 Cda, 800 cases. Good acidity, organic, herbal, minerality nice. Almond and grapefruit finish. Very good length and thought quite crispy.
A 2022 Aphros Phaunus Pet Nat Sparkling Rose from Portugal was a big bust.

Last night as an aperitif I opened N.V. Hush Heath Estate Tesco Finest Brut English Sparkling Wine. The ESW designation is for wines given their fizz by the traditional method. Hush Heath Estate has a growing reputation for ESW made from the three Champagne varieties and it seems the Tesco supermarket chain leapt in early. I've had this particular bottle 3 year, but I bought the first in 2016 and I suspect this came from the same batch. Bountiful effervescence, beautiful mature biscuity flavours.

Does this mean generous?

Not at all. I found the wine to be a huge disappointment. There was also a Lambrusco that was not my style...2022 Corte Manzini Bolla Rossa . Way too light and sweet with hardly any depth.

Bob, a very nice bubble that I have to import from your province is the 2016 Alain Voge St. Péray Les Bulles d'Alain Petillant made from marsanne. Jenise got some and can confirm that it is worthy.

Agreed, very worthy, Bill. I don't have any left.

Opened two bubblies in the last two days, however. On Sunday night at a French resto in Whidbey Island, a Jacquesson 745 was absolutely superb. Rich in the classic, old style. We were going to offer our waitress a taste, but when she brought cheap, big-rimmed flutes instead of wine glasses, we decided she wasn't worthy (yes, we did get her to trade them out, but the fact that she didn't even guess....)

And yesterday, we opened a 2008 Taittinger Comtes to share with Jeff Grossman and Pumpkin!!!!
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Eastport in Calgary should be able to get it for you.
