WTN: & the Revolution

by David M. Bueker » Sun Jul 30, 2023 10:17 pm

  • 2002 Prince Florent de Merode Corton-Bressandes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru (7/30/2023)
Disturbing cork that had dried wine on the top, but it was sounds and came out in one piece. Lovely translucent ruby red color. Aromatics were surprisingly youthful, with sweet cherry and very little in the way of earthy, developed character. The palate was similarly simple, such that it felt more like a high quality, yet generic Pinot Noir, rather than something that came from some reasonably high class dirt. Enjoyable to drink, but not worth the nearly 20 years of cellaring.

I had a couple of bottles of the 2001 Bressandes as well as the 2001 Clos Du Roi and drank all 4 bottles by age 10.
Our friends David and Nadine had recommended them and we pounced on the bargain price of $75 each.
They matured quite quickly but were still enjoyable.
The last 2 bottles (one of each) were really quite lovely and worth the tariff but my brother-in-law, Mark, kept his a little longer and they had started to drop off.

I could see that with a 2001 - not as much stuffing as 2002. This bottle had loads of fruit, but basically nothing else. Weirdness.

Yes, you get that sometimes with aged 'basic' wines, that never really develop into something. But, one could have imagined more for this one, even if not known to be the best producer.

I guess you could always fall back on the tropes of 'sub-threshold TCA' or 'needs even more time to evolve'!

Well I have another bottle, so I might as well just leave it for a while.
