- 2005 Edmunds St. John Syrah Wylie-Fenaughty - USA, California, Sierra Foothills, El Dorado County (7/4/2023)
The was the old of an old and new California Syrah pairing for July 4. It hit all the high notes I was expecting, with savory roasted meat, cedar, turned earth, dark berry and warm leather aromas and flavors. Medium bodied, the only tiny nit would be that the alcohol poked out just a bit at first. A few minutes in the fridge fixed that, so watch the serving temp in the summer months. Structure has been mostly consumed, but there's still enough spine for a few more years of cellaring, but now may be one of those mystical high points for the wine.
- 2019 Lagier Meredith Syrah - USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder (7/4/2023)
The young bottle in a young and old pairing of California Syrah for July 4. I had read a note that this was surprisingly open for business, so wanted to have one soon. Well it's true. Much like the 2016 LM Syrah, the 2019 is showing extremely well now, with great balance of blackberry fruit, some herbal accents, and fantastic palate depth. For pure fun it's great now, but it has all the stuffing and also structure to age just as well as any other Lagier Meredith Syrah.

I thought this great last year, have been hoarding my final bottle, but maybe I should just follow your lead and enjoy...

Yeah the one thing keeping me from my final bottle is that it is buried deeper than the earth’s core.
