TN: 1993 Lindeman's Shiraz - Cabernet Limestone Ridge Vd.

Found this bottle hiding in the cellar and popped the cork last night - last bottle of probably 6, the others consumed at least 20 years ago. Pleasant surprise - the oak wasn't aggressively American in nature though lots of and the fruit was mellow and not overly sweet. One could easily have mistaken this for a French cab despite the shiraz component.

A pleasant surprise. I have a 94 Pyrus (Bordeaux blend) and a 94 St. George Cab left. May have to open them together and see how they made out.

We opened a '95 Pyrus in 2018, and it was a great bottle.

Might have to have an Antipodean lunch theme some time, although not as many people in the group seem to cellar those wines. Some of the older ones can be very good, though.

Funny, I got out of Australia from early this century because the sweet oak reached a level that seemed to obscure everything else, at least in many wines. Now some old Aussie wines lose pretty much everything BUT the wood and are therefor uninteresting, but with others, 30 years or so seem to leave the interesting bits there but the oak level is lowered enough to enjoy the wine - they are not just one tone (oak) wines.

I have some 1980s Australians left if you want to try the some time......

In 90s I used to buy Penfolds 389 regularly, but I'd bet in this century I've bought maybe a dozen bottles of Aussie red. But did have a lot that included a few bottles of Lindemans- the 93 and 94 of this, and the 94 St George. I liked both the the Limestones (the St George was a bit hot and sweet for me).

I still have two '86 389's. Probably still have two dozen Oz bottles in all, including some Pewsey Vale reislings which are essentially the only modern Aussies I've ever bought. I actually know there are still wines made there I'd love, but they aren't what gets exported.

I stopped buying Aussie wines pretty much after the first few years of this century as they almost all seemed to have become the jammy style I dislike. The only thing I have kept up a bit are the whites and a few Pinots, but I still have around 18 cases including those younger wines, which is why I'd like to start drinking some of them, preferably blind. Just not sure that our group could come up with that sort of wine. A lot of good stuff from vintages like 1998 and at least one good Penfolds 707 vertical in there.

Maybe we just need to throw a lamb on the barbie and call for participants.

THIS. Especially since you have 18 cases--you're way, way behind.
