Has some roast lamb with rosemary last night and went hunting in the cellar for a Bordeaux to pair with it. Came across this minor league Margaux.

The 86 vintage was overall pretty darned hard (tannic) and took time (sometimes a whole bunch of time, as in the case of Sociando Mallet which has yet to fully come around).

I feared that I might have left it too long for a minor player like the Gurgue, but was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to drink quite well - tannins present but softened, sufficient fruit, little tannin, decent acid but not too much. My opinion was mirrored by She-who-must-be-obeyed, who can be quite analytical (and condemnatory in appropriate cases). She thought it was quite nice.

Big bonus was finding a half case of Ch. Margaux in the same bin, that I had completely forgotten I had!

Hopefully, Bill, that Margaux was in your inventory!

The Margaux is 1988. Which is better in a way as the 86 is apparently still fairly hard.

And yes, it is in the inventory but the only time I search on CT is by selected parameters so I'd have to search on all Medoc wines to come across it (there's only a couple of dozen cases of that in the cellar - you aren't helping me drink fast enough, Jenise!).

Interesting post. I don't recall ever having a La Gurgue!
