- 2012 Rhys Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (6/13/2023)
My last bottle from this vintage, and I managed to wait long enough for it to actually mature. It’s still clearly a Rhys Pinot, with a lot of power and depth, but rather than being just a solid monolith, it actually had obvious and delicious tertiary earthy tones to go along with the fruit and spice. The fruit backbone was still obviously California-based, but it gave a clear view of what can happen when a thoughtfully crafted wine, grown with care in the right place, is allowed time to reveal its core. I wish I still had another bottle, but there are plenty of other vintages in the cellar, and I now have proof of what can happen with enough patience.
