Retailer Hype in Beaujolais

by Dale Williams » Mon Jun 12, 2023 1:34 pm

OK, I know we all get lots of retailer hype, but the latest First Bottle offer of a Fleurie struck me as especially funny:
"Château des Bachelards has become the unquestioned finest producer in the region. " (wine is a Fleurie)
Ok, I question that, as I drink a lot of Beaujolais and have never heard of producer. AFAICT, only Bachelards mentioned here was a George DuBoeuf offering. Not a lot of CT notes, and if you filter out one enthusiastic taster scores would be in mid80s. Suckling gave high scores (yawn). Curious if anyone here knows the producer?

Never heard of them. Laughed out loud when I read the offer.

Bachelards is a new name for me. I consulted the RVF's 2023 edition of Les Meilleurs Vins de France. The estate gets a * rating (the maximum *** is earned by Louis Claude Desvignes and Thivin in Beaujolais). The write-up is sufficiently appreciative to tempt me but the prices (c.€30) are high.

Crazy hyperbole and yet another reason I am very skeptical of words coming from people trying to sell me things, unless we have developed a relationship of trust!

I am totally used to hyperbole, it’s just that somehow instead of saying “we think this is the best winery in Beaujolais”, “Suckling thinks the best winery in Beaujolais”, or “some/many think this is the best winery in Beaujolais” , declaring a winery that 99+% of Beaujolais fans have never heard of as “unquestioned finest producer” strikes me as....well outright lying.

Indeed. It also makes me wonder about their intended audience. Perhaps people who buy wine but have no idea what they are buying?!

Last Bottle/First Bottle hype again, this time a 2020 St. Amour from this producer. Glad I checked here first.

I had just deleted this but went back to read. Hype indeed: "!!! In my trusty Beaujolais field guide, I’ve marked this ICONIC estate down as one of the top two or three Beaujolais on THE PLANET! " Which is clearly better than say in Beaujolais.

Yeah. And then you go to CT and recent reports, collectively speaking, don't come close. Stefan's getting more OTT all the time.

Wow! I thought I knew all about wine retailer hype (though I never was on Rimmerman's email list) but this takes it up to 11  It's so obviously counterfactual that it reminds me of a certain political candidate...
