WTN: Graacher and Gevrey- fun start to week

by Dale Williams » Fri Jun 09, 2023 11:36 am

Tuesday was haddock, spinach, and chickpeas in a chipotle/adobo broth as well as salad, wine was the 2021 Max Ferd. Richter Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett . I shoulda bought more. Limeade, green apple, minty herbs. Electric kabinett, piercing but integrated acidity, very good length. B+/A-

Mushroom risotto with peas, salad, and the 2005 Trapet “Ostrea” Gevrey-Chambertin. Earthy, black plum and red cranberry, crunchy, no hurry. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Richter has really come up the ranking the last five or six years.

And now it's all gone?

I guess the interest in German wine is good for the business, but it was more relaxing for a certain type of consumer when things sat on the shelves longer...

David, I think it was your comments that got me looking at Richter again.
Yes, Rahsaan it used to be that with a few exceptions you could take your time trying Germans to see what you liked. When I ordered these a few months ago loads of NY retailers had. By time I got around to trying, one retailer near Buffalo has (for 15-20% more than I paid). Reluctant to add more sources, and would have to buy 9 to get free shipping. But glad for producers/importers/retailers
