WTN: DryCreekVnyd PinotNoir RRV '21....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Jun 07, 2023 12:52 pm

Tried this last night at DinDin:
1. DryCreekVnyd DCV10Vnyd/RRV (13.6%; Clones: 777/Pommard; Vine age: 20 yrs; 10 mo. in Fr.oak; Hrvst: Sept 25 2021; SaH: 24.5 Brix; TA: 0.61 %; 625 cs) 2021: Med.color; attractive black cherry/PN/cherry light toasty/oak slight earthy bit simple/straightforward RRV PN nose; fairly tart/tangy fairly strong PN/cherry/black cherry/lightly spicy some toasty/pencilly/Fr.oak slight earthy/dusty pleasant flavor w/ light tangy tannins; long attractive finish that mimics flavor; an altogether pleasant expression of RRVPN that's not particularly distinctive or different much from a basic Siduri RRV PN. $40.00/$36.00 (VSP)

More bickeyfrip from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. DCV has been making RRV PN from DCV10 vnyd for a number of yrs. They have been pleasant enough but just that. None have particularly thrilled me nor rise to the level of quality of their Zins, which are absolutely first rate.

Perhaps the particular site is not suited to PN, or perhaps DCV's winemaking is not suited to PN?

Dave,
I suspect the DCV10 vineyard might not be the best possible RRV location for PN. However, I'm not a winemaker and by no means am I an expert at divining the best possible vineyard locations. I have noticed that there are great vineyards and humdrum vineyards located within a quarter of a mile of each other, here in Sonoma County. I do know that they grow a lot of whites in DCV10, but what that means for PN I have no idea.

Please don't use acronyms such as RRV without first spelling them out. I had to go to google to find out that RRV meant Russian River Valley.

Paul, RRV is very, VERY commonly used shorthand. Perhaps you don't pay a lot of attention to pinot noirs?

OK, I apologize for my ignorance. And no, except for Saintsbury and a few other Carneros producers I don't follow California pinot noir. I prefer the Burgundian style.

Stylistic lines have become blurred these days. There are plenty of Pinots from California and Oregon that nod heavily towards Burgundy.

And then, unfortunately, there are the over-oaked fruit bomb pinots such as Rodney Strong.

Got any suggestions of CA/OR pinot wines for a Burgundophile to try? Before the California phylloxera outbreak I was fond of Carneros Creek and Saintsbury. I can still find Saintsbury but the NH State Liquor Stores don't carry Carneros Creek.

Rodney Strong is a corporate winery...and basically all crap now.

In Oregon I would recommend trying to find something from Goodfellow, Vincent Wine Co., Division Wine Co., Patricia Green Cellars, or Evesham Wood (to name a few).

There are so many CA producers, but if you could find Peay, Sandhi, or Anthill Farms that could be a good place to start.
