WTN: Two Older SQN Reds....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Fri Jun 02, 2023 2:01 pm

Tasted these two SQN Reds over the last few days:
1. SQN Just For The Love Of It Syrah Calif RW (15.2%; Alban/BienNacido/Stolpman/WhiteHawk/ShadowCnyn vnyds) Elaine & Manfred Krankl 2002: Dark color w/ some bricking; strong toasty/oak strong blackberry/Syrah/strawberry slightly oxidized fairly complex/mature Syrah nose; lightly tart/tangy rich/lush rather srong toasty/Fr.oak bit drying strong blackberry/Syrah/boysenberry rather ripe/overripe flavor w/ light drying tannins; very long finish w/ light drying tanninsmimics flavor; still has some Syrah fruit but not going to get any better I suspect.

2. SQN Ox PinotNoir SheaVnyd/Yamhill/OR (14%; Wadenswil Clone) 1999: Med.dark color w/ some browning; bit tired/dried out some cedary/pencilly/toasty/oak light PN/Burgundian/aged light smokey some complex fully mature & then some nose; fairly tart/tangy some smokey/toasty/oak bit cedary/pencilly lovely PN/cherry/Butgundian quite smooth/graceful/gentle rather complex bit Burgundian flavor w/ light gentle tannins; very long/lingering some cherry/PN/earthy some toasty/pencilly/Fr.oak lightly tart/tangy some Burgundian/mature PN finish w/ light smooth bit drying tannins; still some fruit left but a lovely fully mature complex PN; not distinctively OR PN; probably better 5-6 yrs ago but still in remarkable good shape for 24 yr old PN. $68.50

More Waddergip from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Both of these were pretty typical of old SQN reds. The fruit seems to hang around for a very long time but they never/seldom develop the complexity that is routine for an EdmundsStJohn or an Ojai or a Qupe/LindquistFamily Syrah. This Syrah was pretty typical and towards the end of the tasting, it was pretty much a goner. The Pinot was a bit better & showed some complexity, but by the end of the evening, it had turned a murky brown & was pretty much on its last gasp. But they do get big Parker scores..so whatta I know??
Manfred quit making OR PN in 2005. As he would tell it, he & his son would get into this truck, head up to SheaVnyd, pick up the lug boxes of PN, then turn right around & head home. Musta been a great father/son bonding experience!!

Interesting. Never had a truly old SQN wine.

I do find myself surprised at how many wines you open change color for the worse (e.g., your murky brown comment on the Pinot) during the course of a tasting. In 30 years of serious wine drinking, even with very old wines I have never once seen that happen.

Well, David....I see it fairly often in old Calif red wines. Not as much in old European reds.
Don't know why that is....but I can make something up if you'd like!!

No need. It just strikes me very oddly - even for old California wines.
