WTN: Pinots of different sorts

by Rahsaan » Sat May 06, 2023 9:23 pm

Yesterday I opened NV Moussé Fils L'Or d'Eugène Brut and found it a bit too Meunier. But the rest of the bottle tonight was absolutely delicious, more juicy and finessed character and it felt like the PN balance was more apparent.

Even better because tonight's bottle of 2008 Louis Boillot Gevrey Chambertin Champonnet was a big disappointment. Pristine cork but showed all kinds of off-elements throughout. At first it was sour and oxidized on the palate. Filled in a bit with air, and structural elements were elegant and resolved. But the fierce anger never disappeared and I'm not sure that time will be its friend.

What was the disgorgement on the Moussé? I have so many different bottlings from him it’s the only way to keep track - especially since he keeps changing the names!

Bottle said 11/2/2021, but not sure if month/day is European or American style.

So do I take this to mean you are a fan of Moussé in general? I was happy that I got more pleasure on day 2, and I could sense the quality all the way through. But I'm probably not rushing out for more.

I remember early in my wine-drinking career I enjoyed Franck Pascal and EO Vrigny. And then this week I had a nice bottle of Aubry, where the Meunier was apparent but within control, so I figured why not buy Moussé. But this reminded me of why Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are so special!

Yes, we have been big fans of Moussé for many years. Laura in particular is a fan of Meunier, so we actively seek it out. That being said, Moussé has jumped on the dosage is evil bandwagon in the last couple of years, which makes some of his wines harder to like. My “sweet spot” is 3-5 g/l.

Aha. I haven't tracked over time. I think this one was around 2 g/l, which is probably also lower than my sweet spot, but it was not at all severe. Ample body and depth, it seemed a 'well-made' wine. I just didn't like the flavors when Meunier signature was so dominant!
