On Thursday night we opened a 2017 Cayuse Camaspelo to go with a steak salad. It was delicious, but the flavors were not at all what I expected based on prior Camaspelos from earlier vintages. In fact, blind, I'd have ID's it as a Reynvaan Rocks cab and been confident I'd nailed it--lots of green olives here, and the Reynvaan is the only other cabernet I've experienced green olives with. Otherwise, blackberry with a wee hint of passion fruit and silky tannins.
Last night I was serving a beef/tomato/onion stew that would be quite sweet from the huge quantity of tomato and onion, so chose this Aussie shiraz a friend brought back from Australia, a 2015 Rockford Basket Press. Joyfully open and ready to go the second the cork was out, it was full of sweet black currant and strawberry fruit that was a perfect match for the dish. Per the label, only 14% alcohol but it drank more like 15% +.
