WTN: Easter Sunday wines

by Tim York » Tue Apr 18, 2023 6:23 am

For Easter we had a slightly sweet preparation of the traditional lamb. This indicated a Mediterranean wine and Bandol is usually my preference for this pairing. For contrast I also pressed a CndP into this service. My stocks of mature versions of both are now getting very low. Alas my last bottle of Tourtine was badly corked. This was especially sad as the previous bottle in 2018 was absolutely outstanding; one of my best ever from Bandol, which I generally prefer as an appellation to CndP for its greater class and elegance.

2016 Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne Brut Cuvée Spéciale Millésimé - France, Champagne (09/04/2023)
Nice lively Champagne, fruitier and in a less citrus register than some others and not the most complex and classy of bubblies. But a good starter.

1996 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale La Tourtine - France, Provence, Bandol (09/04/2023)
My last bottle. Corked! NR (flawed) :(

1996 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale La Migoua - France, Provence, Bandol (09/04/2023)
This bottle was pressed into service straight from the cellar when a bottle of Tourtine proved to be corked. Like the 1997, it showed medium+ body, rose note, balsamic, herbal, tar and anise touches together with fresh acidity. Just about very good, I was less inspired than by Tourtine of the same year, if sound.

2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (09/04/2023)
This bottle was several notches less good than my last bottle in 2018. Still gutsy and rich but infused with a note of varnish, which was not disagreeable at this level and added freshness, but may be at indicator of a VA problem, at least in this bottle. Still just about very good.

2004 Charles Hours Jurançon Uroulat - France, Southwest France, Jurançon (09/04/2023)
This a survivor from a cull of sweeties which I made at auction a few years ago. I'm glad I kept this bottle. It showed vigorous pineapple infused fruit as well as some candied fruit, fine minerals, juicy fresh acidity and a butterscotch sweet undertow, which I would have taken for evidence of botrytis, had I not been informed by a grower that Jurançon NEVER sees botrytis. Very good.

Just 5 drinkers; two daughters and one son-in-law. Quite a lot of the Jurançon was left over to the next couple of days when, if anything, it was even better.

Sucks about the corked Tempier. The late 1990s didn't seem to be the best period for the domaine.
