2017 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese feinherb Ur Alte Reben - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (4/6/2023)
If I knew then what I know now I would not have opened a single bottle of this until now. It’s magical. The aromatics are elegant yet insistent. The palate deep and simultaneously ethereal. This is what magic is with Riesling, where the fruity and floral elements combine with the infinite mineral depths that come from old vines on perilously steep slopes. There’s a soupçon of sweetness, but it just broadens the palate presence, making the wine likely even more ageable, like some of the great Trimbach VT wines from the late ‘80s. The Ur Alte Reben has been a transcendent wine since the first release in 2012, and this is the best rendition I have tasted to date.
