WTN: Capsule Controversy

by David M. Bueker » Tue Feb 21, 2023 8:43 pm

2004 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel - Germany, Nahe (2/21/2023)
First of all, please see the photo I uploaded to CellarTracker. This wine is not a “Goldkapsel” bottling. I purchased this on release through the Skurnik DI offering, and it has a white capsule. That’s because prior to 2006* the Dönnhoff Auslesen not from Brücke and Hermannshöhle had white capsules. Anyway, the wine is in perfect form now, almost 20 years from the vintage. Lightly honeyed, and still in full possession of fresh, peachy fruit, it’s moderate in density, and full in flavor. It’s a “normal” Auslese, rather than a super-sized BA in Auslese labeling. Given the amount of fruit there is still a long time to go, but I like the balance now.

* excepting some later-released bottles that received the gold capsule that became standard in 2006

thanks for notes. I confess to finding some of the Donnhoff descriptions confusing. There are no wines where there is both a white and GK correct?

Sadly no, as some late releases of wines formerly with white caps got gold caps. Same AP number!

That's confusing.
But I meant (at least at original release) Donnhoff doesn't usually do 2 AP #s of same vinyard/pradikat distinguished by capsule?

No. Only when there’s an auction version.
