WTN: Two Whites/Two Reds w/ DinDin....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Feb 16, 2023 3:14 pm

Had these wines w/ DinDin over the last few days:
1. Bedrock GWT AltaVistaVnyd/MoonMtnDist/SonomaCnty (13.5%; 2.5 acres plntd in 1940's) 2014: Med.dark gold color; lovely very spicy/GWT/rose petal/floral/slight hair oil bit cinammon/nutmeg slight mineral bit complex very perfumed nose; fairly tart/tangy rather rich quite spicy/GWT/floral/rose petal some chalky/mineral totally dry slightly bitter fairly austere for Calif GWT quite lovely flavor; very long quite spicy/GWT/floral/rose petal/nutmeg some earthy/chalky/stony somewhat rich totally dry/bit austere finish w/ slight bitterness; not the usual in-your-face/hair-oil Calif GWT but quite dry & a bit on the austere side; this is how Trimbach would make GWT in Calif if they could; a subtle Alsatian expression of Calif GWT; needs another 4-8 yrs of age.

2. Carlisle GrunerVeltliner SteinerVnyd/SonomaMtn/SonomaCnty (14.1%; 250 cs) 2016: Med.gold color; strong GV/white pepper/floral/carnations quite spicy/perfumed some chalky/mineral classic Wachau-like GV nose; bit soft slight tangy/metallic rather rich/lush very spicy/white pepper/GV/floral light chalky/mineral some complex flavor; very long/lingering very spicy/white pepper/GV/floral some complex finish; a really lovely expression of GV that reminds a lot of a Wachau Smaargd in character; has put on weight since its release; beautiful expression of Calif GV.

3. Matthiasson Refosco MatthiassonVnyd/NapaVlly (13.2%; www.Matthiasson.com) Napa 2012: Rather dark color; strong plummy/Refosk/blackberry/licorice some earthy/dusty pretty classic Refosk nose; quite tart/tangy strong blackberry/plummy/Refosk bit pungent/licorice fairly earthy/dusty slight pencilly/oak fairly structured bit complex flavor w/ modest chewey tannins; very long strong plummy/Refosk/blackberry/licorice slight earthy/dusty light pencilly/oak slight rustic complex finish w/ light chewey tannins; a very attractive of Refosk more like a Slovene/OldWorld than Calif; has put on weight since release & can use a few more yrs yet; a lovely OldWorld expression of Refosk

4. Castelli Nebbiolo Estate/GreenVlly of RRV/SonomaCnty (13.6%; 62 cs; Dry Farmed; www.CastelliVineyards.com) Emilio & Laura Castelli/Sebastapol 2014: Med.dark color w/ some bricking; beautiful very fragrant Nebb/violets/lilacs/floral light tarry/pungent some earthy/dusty/OV some complex very aromatic nose; quite tart/tangy fairly rich/lush very strong Nebb/floral/lilacs/violets/dried rose petal light pungent/tarry/road tar fairly structured some complex flavor w/ modest chewey tannins; very long/lingering structured/tannic very strong floral/Nebb/violets/lilacs/rose petal slight tarry/pungent some complex finish w/ some chewey tannins;speaks very strongly of Nebb but doesn't have the hard/bitey tannins to take your head off; nor the soaring aromatics you get from B/B; much like a Val d'Osssola Prunent of Garrone; a beautiful expression of Nebb that can still go another 4-8 yrs.

More krinklesplat from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Good showing by Calif here. Both the Gruner & the Nebb were impressive Calif renditions of those varietals, definitely Calif but suggestions of their OldWorld counterparts. Emilio's Nebb was one of the best expressions of Calif Nebb I can recall. It has a richness & texture you don't get from most Piemonte Nebbs.

I suppose it would be interesting to see the Trimbach folks make Gewurztraminer in California. I actually suspect that they would not try. I could see Riesling though.
