WTN: 2 Spatlese meet a Morgon, all ina good place

Harissa salmon with potatoes and onions, roasted broccoli
2007 JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Spatlese
Some Prum pseudo-reduction matchstick when opening, cinnamon spiced peaches, balanced acids, really in a nice place. B+/A-

2004 Karthauserhof Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg Spatlese
In an even nicer place. Snappy acids, citrus blossoms and spice, clean apple and nectarine fruit, excellent length A-

Pork/fish sauce meatballs, sesame/brownbutter/miso noodles, shiitakes with bok choy

2009 G. Descombes Morgon

Rich but with balancing acids, red plum and cherry, coffee, and a hint of smoke. There’s a little animal note that I kept glimpsing, unsure if a touch of (pleasant) brett or just my imagination. B+/B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Nice set of aged wines.

This was the regular, not the VV? I normally don't peg the regular as something to hold that long. But of course preferences vary, and 09 was ripe.

Prüm and Karthauserhof sounds really good. Somehow I ended up with only two bottles of 2007 Prüm - both Himmelreich Auslese GK. Go figure.

Yes, regular Morgon. Was pretty ripe and monolithic when young.
Ok, so 2 Prum, but bet even in 2007 (I remember not a vintage you loved) you have plenty of MSR and probably quite a bit of Nahe.

Actually no, other than a decent stash of Selbach I don’t have much of anything. Only 7 bottles of Dönnhoff which is a very low number for a vintage from that decade.

One thing I recall is that the Theise portfolio tasting that year was on a blisteringly hot day (high of 98), and tasting was just gross, as the A/C at Tribeca Grill could not keep up. It really tamped down my buying, as I did not get a decent read on things.
