Trash or Treasure?

by Elisia S. » Fri Mar 02, 2007 1:29 am

My father cracks me up... he keeps his liquor in the bottom of a back closet and while looking for something today, he found a bottle of wine that he has no memory of getting. He asked my opinion (I'm a novice, btw) and I told him all we can do is pop it open and see what we get.

But in the meantime, I'm curious - can anyone tell me anything about a 1995 Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvingnon?

Current retail is about $90, although unless the closet was pretty cool, the wine may not have survived. This wine normally lasts a good long time, usually needs it to be pleasant to drink since the tannins are usually pretty strong.

Here's a review of the vintage:

Wine Spectator: 91 points
Wows you with finesse and elegance. Openly ripe and fruity, with supple, fleshy, plummy Cabernet flavors, hints of cedar and spice, finishing with a clean, polished aftertaste and supple tannins. Builds intensity on the aftertaste, so cellaring short-term is our advice. Best from 2000 through 2007. 13,500 cases made.
Nov/98

Best to drink it sooner than later based on my experience.

Regards, Bob
