WTN: Dr. L Riesling 2005

by Bruce Hayes » Thu Mar 01, 2007 9:21 pm

MSR. From the Loosen Brothers.

Almost nothing on the nose.

Sweet, lots of honey, quite grapey, spicy, with fleshy and rich ruby grapefruit toward the end. Totally lacking in the edge, bite and zippy acidity of previous vintages.

Kind of like drinking flat Coke. Becomes boring to drink after a glass or two, which is something I never thought I would say about Riesling.

Am hoping this was a bad bottle.

Screwcap closure.

Had this wine last night. Here's my take on it. It followed a Halbtrocken.

Pale lemon drop colour with a delicate floral aroma, this is a much sweeter wine, quite juicy, a little grainy with hints of flower musk, stewed apple and a tantalising infusion of lime. Seems quite delicate but has a surge of power to the fresh finish that lingers sweetly. 8.5% alc. Screwcap.

So .... though sweet, I thought the acid was there. My bottle was lightly chilled. I only had it at a tasting, but imagine with its sweetness level, one glass would be enough unless accompanied by spicy food.

Cheers,
Sue

I've had it twice, and both times it was flat and lifeless sugar water.

Many of those posted notes are mine Bob. I think I indicated that it was missing the guts (acidity and pepperiness) of previous vintages. Had a 2004 just a few weeks ago and it was great.

I liked a tad better than you, but agree the '04 was considerably better. I did however like the '05 Loosen Erdener Treppchen Kab.

I've had 3, or 4 bottles of the '05 over the past year. While it's not an exceptional wine I have not noticed any of the bottles being "flat and lifeless". I wonder if you guys are getting some bad juice somehow?

Similar view of it being bland sugar water here. Can't recall the vintage, but tasted about 3-4 years ago and no desire to try again. Jacobs Creek riesling outshone it by a mile

Last year I described this wine as del Monte pear juice.

From the comments it seems like this was both bad and typical of the wine.
