WTN: An Old Ribolla & A Syrah....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Fri Jan 06, 2023 2:26 pm

Had these two wines last night w/ DinDin. It was not a good scene.
1. Ryme RibollaGialla VeraVnyd/NapaVlly (13.9%) Forestville 2010: Deep amber color w/ slight bricking; quite resiny/VM some oxidative/nutty slight earthy/mousey some complex nose; bit soft somewhat oxidative/nutty/maderized fairly resiny/VM slight unclean/mousey somewhat bitter no RG fruit flavor w/ light bitter tannins; med.long rather oxidative/nutty/bit sherry some resiny/VM somewhat bitter no RG fruit slight muusey/unclean finish; clearly a VM but not one that has matured very well; not anything like the His Vermentino would be like; resembles some a Jura Vin Jaune; gets a bit better as it warms up but a rare Ryme fail.

2. WindGap Syrah SonomaCoast (12 1/2%; #1639; 18 brls/420 cs) WineGapWines/Sebastapol 2012: Med.dark color w/ some browning; strong w-c/Rhonish/roaste/smokey slight espresso/wet wool/wet Army blanket slight blackberry/Syrah complex somewhat interesting if a bit tired nose; bit soft strong Rhonish/w-c/smokey/espresso some wet Army blanket very slight blackberry/Syrah rather tired/dried out somewhat interesting flavor w/ light bit drying tannins; med.long strong Rhonish/w-c/espresso very slight Syrah/blackberry some complex finish w/ light tannins; dominated by the w-c/Rhonish character; some interesting things therein but pretty much on its last legs.

More gipplestreak from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Two big fails last night. As I retasted these, I kept hearing these squeaky voices from a Bedrock & a Carlisle box over in the corner..."drink me....no...drink me", but I ignored them and wrapped it up for the evening.

Interesting. I am still drinking Wind Gap Sonoma Coast Syrahs from the 2007-2010 era, and they are not showing any color change yet, and still quite lively. I still have some of the 2012. Will have to open one soon & compare notes.

Wet army blanket. I presume that's a used wet army blanket? Sounds awful. I may own this wine, will look. Haven't been happy with any of the Wind Gaps.

Fascinating notes as always! Such a bummer the Ribolla Gialla didn't hold up--the Ryme wines I've had young have given me so much pleasure. One small question:

Is this a typo for Vare Vineyard? (Things are gonna get mighty confusing for me if there's a another Ribolla Gialla source so named!). And would you happen to know if wines sourced from there are still so labeled? I seem to remember an ownership change that was concomitant with a name change--but I've never had such a bottle so labeled, so I can't recall.

Still seeing RG bottlings labeled Vare from both Ryme and Arnot-Roberts. I know that one of the Vare couple that owned the vineyard passed away nearly 10 years ago, but if there’s been a name change it would be quite recent. I have 2018 and 2019 wines sourced from Vare in the cellar.

It’s worth noting that my iPhone autocorrects Vare to Vera.

Yup, Keith ... that would be the George Vare Vnyd. George died some yrs ago & his wife kept it going for a few yrs and then sold it to Gary Bengier some 5-6 yrs ago.
