WTN: Drinking again! :) Christoffel ÜrzWürz Kab 2005

After a rather short and easy jog a few weeks back I got shin splints. I don't know why, since my shoes are still in good shape. It became so painful I had to go to the doctor and was prescribed a pain killer so I've been off wine for longer than I would like. Now my legs are in better condition (I might even go for a short jog during the weekend!) and I'm off the dashed meds so I opened up a Riesling to celebrate.

Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett 2005 9%, £8,50 from French & Logan in London + shipping on top = ?€, AP 2 602 041 004 06, Bottled with Stelvin (bravo!).

Light as water. The nose is surprisingly red toned - I believe the last time I tried this wine I said it smells of baked brick, but now the red tones remind me more of lingonberry. It is a very attractive note coupled with the ripe Rieslingisity and plentiful minerality. The palate is rather weighty, very ripe, rather sweeter than I would hope for the acidity level which makes the aftertaste a little sherbetty. But it is still a very attractive drink though it isn't a Kabinett.

Indeed. All 2005s I've so far tasted seem a Prädikat+ higher than stated.

Do people release starred kabinetts?

That would be a good idea to allow the full range of pradikat while also having more truth in labelling.

While it is not anything common, August Kesseler did release a kabinett gold capsule in 2002, so it does happen.

When my son Tim joined the Army he signed up for Airborne. After his basic training he went to Ft. Benning, GA for jump school and after 2 weeks of training there, simulated parachute jumps off towers, etc., he developed shin splints. That ended his Airborne training and it took a few months to heal. He was transferred to an artillery unit, which he is now serving with in Iraq.
