Two German Rieslings with Christmas Eve Dinner
We had Dover sole and opened two special rieslings.
I had been discussing the longevity of Koehler-Rupprechts Kallstadter Saumagen Auslese trocken with David Bueker recently. He had been almost enthusiastic about a 2011 only to have an oth-bottle shortly afterwards. Since I had a bottle left, I promised to report on when we drink it.
Koehler-Rupprechts Saumagen used to have the reputation of taking a very long time to reach its prime. Recently, we had a tasting of 2010 German Riesling (the Idig was gorgeous) where a Saumagen Kabinett trocken was oth and a Spätlese trocken was quite developed. So we had mixed expectations. I guess our bottle was similar to David's first one. Nice, but no future.
TN: 2011 Koehler-Rupprechts Kallstadter Saumagen Auslese trocken
Amber golden color. Quite developed.
Nose: White tobacco, lovage.
Palate: Slightly oxidative, black tea, kumquats, toast, hazelnuts
Medium finish
The other wine was from one of our favourite vineyards:
TN: 2014 Weingut Acham-Magin Forster Kirchenstück Riesling Großes Gewächs
Rich golden color.
Nose: fresh, citrussy, Kirchenstück-typicity.
Palate: White blossoms, racy, spicy, citrus, earl grey, petrol,
long finish.
Still has a long life ahead, but ready to roll.
