An '82! How cool is that. Have you had stuff like this all along? Looks like it was stored underground.

Yeah, how could you tell, lol? Underground for some time, then into a wine fridge once I got married.

Funny story about them. When I was working in the wine biz in the 80's/early 90's, back when you didn't have to sell a kidney to get even a third growth, I would purchase bottles fairly regularly. Most were consumed shortly after purchase, but every now and then I'd lay one down. After a few years I had a decent, albeit small by this group's standards, collection.

But then I met a young lady. We ended up getting engaged and moving in together. However, she was a recovering alcoholic and couldn't have hooch in the house. So the remaining bottles of my collection were sent to a friend, who stored them in his cellar for me.

Fast forward a decade, and Demon Rum took hold of my fiance once again. We parted. (She has since recovered again, and I understand she has been clean ever since.)

Once I was free, and in a place of my own again, I took the collection back. And have been steadily depleting it ever since. There are only a handful left, as my wife is most certainly NOT an alcoholic and has insisted on opening various ones during holidays, etc. The only ones left now are hopefully ones that have had the fortitude to last 40+ years in bottle; a couple of Sauternes including d'Yquem, a port or 2, a few notable cabs (a '59 Lafite, woo hoo!), a Tokay 6-putt. So probably around 10, at last check.

But I've had them all so long now though that opening them feels like I'm killing one of my children. They've now been with me longer than my mother was!

What a story. And I understand about killing your children; it's hard to learn how to let go and not feel that way. Just remind yourself that it's you who own them, not the other way around.
