WTN: Two Cold-Climate Calif Syrahs...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Nov 03, 2022 2:30 pm

We tried these two cold-climate Syrahs at Pig+Fig last night:
1. Delmore Syrah 65% StoloVnyd/35% BoulderRidgeVnyd/CentralCoast (3 brls; U; 13.5%; http://www.DarrenDelmore.com) PasoRobles 2018: Dark color; very strong c-c/Syrah/black pepper very strong blackberry/Syrah/blueberry some toasty/Fr.oakbit w-c/peppery very roasted/Rhonish quite complex beautiful nose; quite tart/tangy strong c-c/black pepper very strong blackberry/Syrah/blueberry/very spicy fairly toasty/oak some roasted/Rhonish very structured beautiful complex flavor w/ some chewey tannins; very long/lingering strong blackberry/blueberry/very spicy/Syrah structured complex finish w/ some tannins; a beautiful example of c-c Syrah that is starting to show a bit of evolution; can use another 4-8 yrs of age. $36.00

2. Fabien Castel Syrah Rincon/Carpinteria 2021: Very dark/black color; intense c-c/black pepper/very spicy intense blackberry/Syrah/boysenberry some toasty/Fr.oak bit Rhonish/roasted/w-c/espresso rather complex nose; quite tart/tangy intense blackberry/boysenberry/Syrah/very spicy strong c-c/black pepper bit w-c/Rhonish/roasted light toasty/Fr.oak quite complex beautiful youthful flavor w/ ample chewey tannins; very long/lingering intense blackberry/Syrah/boysenberry/very spicy strong c-c/black pepper complex finish w/ ample tannins; quite structured & youthful c-c/Syrah that badly needs some 3-6 yrs of age; reminds some of a SQN Syrah but not quite as extracted & much less Fr.oak; terrific c-c Syrah. $nc (FC)

More figlstrap from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Darren Delmore is National Marketing Director at TablasCreekVnyd. He makes a small amount of wine, mostly Syrah & PinotNoir on the side.
Fabien Castel is te winemaker for Adam Tolmach at OjaiVnyd. He makes a tiny amount of wine on his own there & this may actually be his first wine. Not for sale I believe. This was gifted me by Fabien in my last Ojai order. This comes from a very new vnyd down near Carpenteria looking down on the Pacific Ocean.
I loved both of these Syrahs & great examples of c-c Calif Syrahs.

Surprised to see a wine from Paso Robles introduced as a cold-climate syrah. I guess the deal is that the Delmore winery may be in Paso but the vineyard source is not.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Jenise; the Delmore wine Tom wrote up is NOT from Paso, but from very near the coast in the area on the east of Cambria. Much cooler.

Yeah, where I knew Stolo, one of the vineyard sources, is. But Tom's heading on that wine includes the words 'Paso Robles'. That's what threw me off.

Well, Jenise... Stolo Family Vnyd is not in PasoRobles but way to the West near Cambria. One of the coldest Syrah vnyds in Calif. But the wine is made in PasoRobles.

There’s a reason it is confusing. The wine is a blend from two different AVAs. The characterization of a cool climate Paso wine is entirely misleading. The AVA is Central Coast. Paso is meaningless except to cause confusion.

Well, David... the labeling laws require you to identify where the wine was bttld. That's all that the PasoRobles says on the label and it's not at all meaningless. Just like a Bedrock Evanghelo says on the label Sonoma.. it's not meant to confuse.
Both vnyds are outside any AVA. Daren could have very well identified it as SLOCnty rather than CentralCoast. He was not trying to confuse.

The Bedrock Evangelho shows its AVA as Contra Costa. It shows the location of Bedrock Wine Co as Sonoma. You are conflating one with the other to be deliberately obtuse.

Don’t forget that I am also a Physicist, so I know when “facts” are used to mislead.

Baloney, David... I was not trying to be obtuse at all. Calm down.
I clearly identified the origins of the wine as CentralCoast (or SLOCnty) and clearly Identified the bottling location as PasoRobles. I couldn't have been more clear.
And this wine was not a blend from two different AVA's. Both are from vnyds outside an AVA and only a few miles apart.
Jenise made the mistake of conflating the bottling location with the source of the wine. Get on her case, not mine.

And being a Physicist does not give anyone a corner on discerning facts. I know plenty of Physicists who are not very bright when it comes to facts. Recall that Einstein initially dismissed Quantuum Mechanics.

Right. Just like Google misled you about ESJ.

Ridiculous.

You think Google was intending to mislead me?? You're giving Google too much credit.
You'll notice that Google no longer identifies ESJ as "Permanently Closed". You can thank TomHill for that.
