WTN: Wilfred Rousse Chinon VV '02

by Bill Hooper » Wed Feb 28, 2007 1:00 am

I went to the Salon de Vins de Loire a couple of weeks ago, and got rather burnt-out on Cab Franc for a spell. Well, this marks my return to the saddle, and a fine choice if I do say so. Cherry, rust, 'blood in a tin can' and the cigar saturated flavors of 40 year old wallpaper at a Chicago supper-club. The wine is completely fleshed out -satin-like in texture, but with enough drive left to satisfy the most fickle Loire red fan. I've long admired Rousse for being REAL Chinon (There aren't many left). 12,5% Alc. $13

Never heard of them, regional distribution varying and all..

I see Wilfrid started the domaine in 1987, do you know where he comes from prior to that? Elsewhere in the Loire or is he a real "foreigner"?

Have you tasted the top cuvee Le Clos de la Roche?

I don't know much about the estate. The wines are made by a charming husband and wife team who are relative newcomers. I did try the new '05 Vintage of all the wines (the VV vineyards have just been re-planted so there goes that cuvee for a while). I'll try to dig up the Clos de la Roche TN.

Prost!
