WTN: Three Zweigelts....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Oct 12, 2022 2:47 pm

Tried these three last night:
1. Mehofer BlauerZweigelt geniessen White Austrian Wine (12.5%; http://www.Mehofer.At; ArtisanCollection/NY) Weingut Mehofer/Neudegg 2017: Dark color; strong earthy/loamy rather plummy/Zweigelt/bit blackberry/licorice slight floral/iris slight mushroomy ContraCosta Mataro slight GrandmaNina's cheap perfume fairly pleasant nose; soft/fat/lush fairly earthy/loamy/bit coarse slight tangy/metallic some plummy/licorice/blackberry/grapey/Zweigelt slight GrandmaNina's cheap perfume somewhat coarse flavor w/ light mushy tannins; med.long rather coarse/earthy/loamy some Zweigelt/plummy/licorice slight tangy/metallic light floral/iris/GrandmaNina's cheap perfume bit rustic finish w/ light soft tannins; a pleasant enough expression of Zweigelt but the coarse/loamy character doesn't thrill; my thoughts on the Mehofer...meh.$14.00/l (KK)

2. Schloss Gobelsburg Zweigelt Niederosterreich (12.5%; trocken; LN 01546/20; http://www.Schloss-Gobelsburg.At; SkurnikWines/NY) SchlossGobelsburg 2018: Very dark color; lightly earthy/loamy strong plummy/Zwegelt/licorice/pungent light pencilly/oak bit Syrah-like/blackberry fairly complex lovely nose; bit soft/lush slight tangy/metallic strong plummy/Zweigelt/licorice some earthy/loamy light pencilly/oak somewhat structured some complex flavor w/ modest tangy tannins; very long/lingering light earthy/loamy somewhat structured slight tangy/tannic/metallic strong plummy/Zweigelt/blackberry/Syrah-like some complex finish w/ modest tangy tannins; can use several yrs of age; a very attractive expression of Zweigelt w/ some bright/high-toned character; reminds some of a Languedoc Syrah; structured & not soft/soupy like many; one of the better expressions of Zweigelt I can recall. $18.50 (KK)

3. Paul Achs Lust & Leben Burgenland (12.5%;50% Zweigelt/30% St.Laurent/20% Blaufrankisch; WinebowImprts/NY) PaulAchs/Gols/Burgenland 2018: Dark color; rather strong toasty/oak some earthy/loamy fairly Zweigelt/plummy/licorice/pungent bit high-toned/Pinotish rather fragrant some complex quite attractive nose; fairly tart/tangy strong toasty/oak/pencilly lightly earthy/loamy strong Zweigelt/plummy/licorice some high-toned/Pinotish bit dusty/OV some structured fairly complex flavor w/ modest tangy tannins; very long/lingering strong Zweigelt/plummy/licorice fairly rich some high-toned/Pinotish fairly toasty/Fr.oak light earthy/loamy structured complex finish w/ modest tannins; can use several more yrs; speaks a lot of St.Laurent/Blaufrankisch/slight Pinotish but the Zweigelt gives it richness & texture; one of the better Burgenland reds I've had w/ lots of high-toned perfumed character; vey fairly priced at $17.00 (KK)

More zizzerlust from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Last week I put up a TN on the Brunn Zweigelt, that I very much disliked for its strong earthy/loamy character. I made a disparaging comment on Zweigelt as a grape that received some push-back from people whose tastes I respect. I think those comments were probably harsh generalizations that were out of place. These last two Zweigelts I liked quite a lot.
That said, the earthy/loamy character of Zweigelt, which reminds me some of ContraCosta Mataro, is not one of my favorite grapes. But it has its place in the wine-world.

My thoughts on Mehofer in general: meh

I think Schloss Gobelsburg could produce delicious wines from grapes they found at the grocery store, maybe even grapes thrown out by the grocery store!
