WTN: 77 Dow's

by Jenise » Tue Sep 06, 2022 7:21 pm

Yesterday my annual birth fortnight came to a close with last night's celebration all about sharing this magnum bottle with friends around our firepit on an absulutely perfect summer night. Decanted to remove considerable sediment four hours before serving. Heavenly nose. Raspberry, date bars, brandied spice cake, cassia bark and candied orange rind on nose and palate. Though I fretted over being able to finish such a big bottle, on such a night all the neighbors were out and I was able to offer over-the-fence pours to the neighbors on each side, including one who were celebrating, it turned out, their 47th wedding anniversary. How cool to share a wine with them that has lasted almost as long as their marriage!

Wonderful! I have very little ‘77, but Dow’s is one of my two favorite houses (along with Fonseca), so I treasure even the thought.

This was my last '77. And great, but '77 Fonseca's even better. :)

Dow's and Taylor are two of my favorites. I'm not a fan of Graham's vintage Port. Their house style has too much acetone on the nose for me. I do like the Graham's Six Grapes ruby Port, though.

I have a half dozen 77 Ports left and my fave is the Fonseca, which is superb.

There isn't a poor wine in the bunch, though.
