WTN: 2016 Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux

by Rahsaan » Sun Sep 04, 2022 10:46 am

My first Baudry in many years. Grézeaux used to always be so distinctive with that rustic coffee bean note, but this is a much more polished bottle. Still herbal-inflected, but much more supple and suave. I suppose the winemaking has evolved, as has the climate.

Overall, in a great place for my palate. Ripe cab franc currant flavors, offset by just enough herbal funk, a resolved seamless structure but still fresh and snappy.

Happy to have found this (misplaced) singleton lurking in the bottom of the CSW shelves. Initially it was not for sale, but EL kindly let it go.

Nice!

I don’t have any 2016, but perhaps soon I should check the stash of 2017.

Yeah, nice indeed. Used to find in Calgary but it is a long shipping story for the store..

Used to by Baudry locally, but haven't seen it in years. Boo hoo! But Rahsaan, why wasn't it for sale?

It was apparently a bottle purchased by one of the store staff (EL) for his personal collection. So it wasn't supposed to be on the floor and when they tried to ring it up, it wouldn't register. At first EL was going to find something else for me, but then he decided that he (and his dad DL, co-founder of CSW) had enough Loire wines, so I should enjoy it. And I did!
