WTN: Three Carlisle Syrahs...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Aug 25, 2022 3:28 pm

We tasted ystrday at Pig+Fig a vertical of Carlisle JamesBerry Syrahs, plus these three:
1. Novy/Carlisle Syrah Calif (HdR Cuvee; 16.2%; Page-Nord/NapaVlly, Rosella's/SantaLuciaHighlands,
TeldeschiRanch/DryCreekVlly; 10 cs) 2001
: Dark color w/ some bricking; light cedary/pencilly/oldRed strong blackberry/Syrah/bit peppery some toasty/oak rather complex lovely nose; soft rather cedary/pencilly/oldRed some blackberry/Syrah/peppery/spicy fairly rich/lush slightly drying strong toasty/oak complex flavor w/ light gentle bit drying tannins; very long some cedary/pencilly some blackberry/Syrah/peppery/spicy fairly toasty/Fr.oak fairly complex finish w/ light gentle tannins; showing its age a bit but plenty of Syrah fruit & still in quite good shape & a real pleasure to drink. $nc (MT)

2. Carlisle Syrah Rosella'sVnyd/SantaLuciaHighlands/MontereyCnty (14.1%; 380 cs) 2018: Very dark/near black color; very intense peppery/milk of magnesia blackberry/Syrah/very spicy lightly herbal/SLH/bit licorice some complex nose; fairly tart/tangy quite spicy strong blackberry/Syrah/licorice/peppery bit herbal/SLH some toasty/oak/smokey bit complex flavor w/ modest rich tannins; very long/lingering very strong blackberry/Syrah/very spicy/peppery/licorice some toasty/smokey/oak some complex finish w/ ripe modest tannins; needs another 2-5 yrs of age; quite a lovely classic SLH Syrah.

3. Carlisle Syrah SierraMarVnyd/SantaLuciaHighlands/MontereyCnty (14.9%; 275 cs) 2018: Very dark/near black color; strong blackberry/boysenberry/ripe Syrah/bit spicy lightly herbal somewhat simpler nose; bit soft strong blackberry/boysenberry/Syrah/slight herbal light toasty/oak flavor w/ modest ripe tannins; very long soft bit alcoholic/ripe strong blackberry/Syrah/spicy/slight herbal finish w/ modest tannins; somewhat simpler than the Rosella's but speaks strongly of SLH Syrah.

More krikeyfusser from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. The HdR Cuvee was a gift from MitchTalin. He was the one who won this auction lot at HdR yrs ago and gifted me a btl to try. That btl was badly corked, so he shipped me a replacement btl, long long ago.

2. I have always liked the Syrahs Mike makes from the SantaLuciaHighlands. These two were bot good examples of his effort w/ those grapes. These two were far better & more interesting than the JamesBerry Syrahs we also had.

Wow. Interesting report on that 2001.

16.2% ABV is a bit disturbing, but very glad it showed well.

It carried the alcohol quite well, as do most of Mike's wines.
