Rest In Peace - Daniel Vollenweider

by David M. Bueker » Sat Jul 23, 2022 10:09 am

Learned this morning of the passing of Daniel Vollenweider after a battle with prostate cancer. Laura and I met Daniel in Traben-Trarbach in 2003. He made wonderful wines that were hugely popular with the Boston wine crew in the 2001-2010 time frame. He had recently been represented by Vom Boden, so the wines were finally easy to get.

He was a lovely person and a brilliant winemaker.

That's a big shock. I too visited Daniel's place on a couple of occasions with Belgo/German wine crowd, including, I think, Jean Fisch and Yixin from Singapore. They were great occasions where we got through a wide variety of excellent bottles. Daniel was a great guy and can't have been much older than his 50s.

He must have played a big part in gaining recognition for sites downstream from classical mid-Mosel.

RIP!

I had the news only ten minutes ago.
For the first time, this year, his bottles were on the list of German riesling I receive every July.
I met him once in his Traben Trarbach office.
RIP

Apparently he had planned for this day, and had brought in a co-owner/co-winemaker.

So sorry to hear. I've only been buying since 2012 vintage, only the Wolfer Goldgrube Kab, but have always enjoyed those

It is an unusual name, and it means a field designated for foals in German. I wonder if he was related to the musician Andreas Vollenweider/ (who is responsible for me knowing that trivia about the name - he is a new age harpist).

Well they were both Swiss. Beyond that, who knows.
