WTN: All in the Famille

2003 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley (7/17/2022)
Sometimes wines are about the memories they evoke. This bottle was given to me by a dear friend who passed away two years ago. It’s fully mature, gliding on a plateau overseeing fruit, dark chocolate nibs, tobacco, earth and a dash of vanilla. Tannins are fully integrated, and there is an acidic spine that makes it mouthwatering. The tobacco takes a larger role on the palate, where the fruit turns towards liqueur. Overall it’s heading towards sultry, a more caressing than aggressive wine.

That "fruit turning toward liqueur" is a remnant of that hot vintage. Not always desirable, but it sure can be attractive.

In general, it's pretty safe to presume that whatever happened in California happened here too. If it's cold there, it's probably colder here, and our hot vintages are no less hot. It's just that our seasons are shorter.

Northern California?

Didn't I just rant about generalizations in vintage character?

Yes (Napa), and you did. But some are apt.
