2017 Emrich-Schönleber Halenberg R
Apparently harvested later and with longer time in barrel than the ‘regular’ Halenberg GG. There is definitely a nice creamy richness in the middle (and apparently more RS), but still very much functions as a ‘dry’ Riesling for me. Lovely golden Riesling stalk with firm rippling drive to the fruit, that mid-palate richness, but all in good proportion, nothing too extravagant.

A very lovely layered wine that I was pleased to purchase (chilled) for 42 euros at the shop down the block, when the planned dinner wine was not showing well. But prices at 80/90 USD make me fear returning to the States, because this is much less exciting at those numbers.

Schönleber pricing in the U.S. is more about market position than selling to fans of the wines. I was very surprised that Vom Boden ended up putting Schönleber at the (almost) very top of the market.

Market position meaning trying to find new consumers who chase the blue chip wineries? As opposed to selling through to the old fans.

I guess distributors want to maximize profit. And I did see some listings for Halenberg on the west coast at over $100. Which I thought was crazy. But I'm probably not the target consumer for anyone, picky as I am!

They seem to be chasing the “if it’s expensive it must be good” crowd. Even the Kabinett is pricey.

I know a couple of guys with more money than wine experience who bought cases of Schönleber. I asked them if they had even tried the wines. Both said “no.”
