Noland Brothers do Zin

by Tom N. » Sun May 29, 2022 3:53 pm

The Noland Brothers did a Zinfandel tasting for our Memorial Day cookout at James’ house

Wine A
Nice nose with good color and nice mid palate of red fruit, mouth feel of strong tannins ( for a Zin) and good acidity. Finish was short and clamped down because of tannins. Needs time.

Wine B
Nice bright color with a unusual nose of volatile acidity. Nice tart cherry fruit on midpalate, good acidity and balancing structure. Mid length finish.

Wine C
Nice dark garnet color, fruity nose. Beautiful ripe black cherry fruit with red raspberries in the background. Nice medium long finish of fruit and acidity.

Consensus was Wine C was best, then Wine B with Wine A coming in just behind. All were very good but A and B both developed the in the glass, with Wine A changing the most.

Wine A Tom’s wine Dry Creek Valley 2019 heritage vines zin

Wine B James’ wine 2019 Terra D’Oro Beaver vineyard

Wine C Bob’s wine 2018 Wild Thing Old vine Zinfandel

With our dinner if smoked brisket, pulled pork and extra meat baby back ribs. All wines were wonderful matches.

Wine that evolved the most beautiful as the Dry Creek Valley Zin. But the Terra d’Oro also lost its volatile acidity and became more fruity. Great tasting for a cookout!

Have to admit that I have never heard of Wild Thing or Terra d’Oro.

David
The wild thing is a Carol Shelton wine and brother Bob says she makes some great wines and he buys as many as he can afford! She is called The Queen of Zinfandel. This zin was both affordable and delicious!

I honestly did not know that there was a “Queen of Zinfandel.”

I hate titles like that, but yes Carol is definitely a zinfandel specialist. Been around for eons. Good stuff. Terra d'Oro is, I believe, a winery in Amador County.
