WTN: A Gruner, a Ramato, a Sauternes...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun May 15, 2022 5:50 pm

Had some friends from Charlottesville in this weekend & we tried:
1. Huber Vision GrunerVeltliner (12.0%; www.Weingut-Huber.At; Organic grapes; BroadbentSlctns/Sonoma) Markus Huber/Reichersdorf/Austria NV (L N4893/21): Dark gold color w/ some tiny bubbles; simple GV/white pepper/floral/carnations slight chalky/perfumed talc quite pleasant nose; lightly tart/tangy slightly sweet some GV/white pepper/floral/carnations light perfumed talc bit light/quiet/near vapid flavor; med. slight white pepper/GV/floral somewhat off-dry slight perfumed talc finish; a pleasant enough GV but too sweet for me & too close to vapid; very unthrilling. $15.50 (KK)

2. Oreads Black Muscat of Tyrnavos WW Dry (11.5%; Eklektikon/Wilmington/DE) Papras Wnry/Tyrnavos/Greece 2021: Light red/garnet bit browning color; strong fragrant/perfumey very muscatty/floral light earthy somewhat volatile/fumey nose; fairly tart/tangy totally dry somewhat earthy/dusty quite floral/muscatty/grapeybit volatile/fumey rather interesting flavor w/ little tannins; very long some dusty/earthy strong muscatty/floral/grapey finish w/ light tannins; a pleasant enough black muscat rose bu just that & not very interesting. $20.50 (KK)

3. Ch.Haut-Mayne AC: Sauternes (14.5%; CharlesNealSlctns; MeBaC) E.A.R.L. Roumateilles 2003: Dark brown rather PX color; strong botrytis/apricotty/peachy some alcoholic/volatile some earthy fairly oxidative rather complex/old Sauternes nose; quite tart/tangy rather oxidative/earthy slightly sweet some botrytis/apricitty bit complex flavor; very long/lingering slightly sweet fairly oxidative/earthy some volatile/fumey finish; not a very good example of an old Sauternes; fairly oxidative & old before its time. $19.00/hlf

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The Oreads was a rather strange wine. Made by a natural winemaker, it showed no signs of any natty character. Pretty much all Muscat & not much else.

Grüner? Too sweet? Unlikely. Austrian wine is dry. Maybe you don’t like fruit. ;)

Yup, David... as a rule it is. But not always. I've found plenty on the lower end of the price range that have RS. I'm guessing this one was at least 1%.

If I had a bottle I would send it to a lab. I sorely doubt it has tasteable residual sugar.
