WTN: 1994 Girard Cab Sav Reserve

by Jason Hagen » Sun Feb 25, 2007 3:00 pm

1994 Girard Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (Napa Valley)
Wow. I really enjoyed this. Still looks like a young wine in the glass. The wine has developed nice complexity with the wood integrating into the wine. The tannins are soft and work well with food. I am really impressed with how this is aging. It will be around for many more years. No sign of falling apart. 93pts.

Cheers,
Jason

It's good to be reminded of the existence of a winery that's been around for like forever but that one rarely sees mentioned in tasting notes. Thanks!

Jenise. It is true. I think they went off the map sometime in the 80s. I haven't really kept up with their recent vintages (just don't buy much Cali Cab...or Cab) but this was nice wine.

Girard was purchased a few years ago and is now known as Rudd. Rudd is owned by the the gentleman who owns Dean & De Luca. They are still making decent wines under the Rudd label.

Someone is still making wines under the Girard label, though. I wonder if they are using "Girard" as a second label? Rudd is quite pricey, Girard is moderate.
