by TomHill » Wed Apr 20, 2022 4:01 pm

Tried these two over the last few days:
1. Claudio Quarta Dd'OC&G: Taurasi (15%; www.ClaudioQuarta.It; Enotec Imprts/GreenwoodVillage/CO; Aglianico) Az.Agr. SanPaoolo/Torrioni/Avellino 2016: Very dark/near black color; very strong plummy/Aglianico/boysenberry/choolaty almost Calif/ripe light earthy/dusty/OV/slight rustic very attractive nose; soft quite ripe/blackberry/boysenberry/plummy/Aglianico/bit chocolaty light earthy/dusty/OV slight overripe/alcoholic flavor w/ modest soft/ripe tannins; very long ripe/chocolaty/plummy/Aglianico/boysenberry slight earthy/dusty/OV bit rustic finish w/ some ripe tannins; loads of ripe Aglianico fruit w/ a little Italian rustic character; rather Calif in style. $34.00 (KK)

2. Sigillo Campano Aglianico IGP: Campania Rosso (13.5%; EnotecImprts/Glendale/CO) Antica Masseria del Sigillo/Torrioni/Claudia Quarta 2017: Med.dark color; very strong blackberry/plummy/Aglianico/licorice rather dusty/OV light toasty/oak rather ripe lovely nose; bit soft rich/lush rather plummy/blackberry/licorice/Aglianico bit off-dry/overripe fairly dusty/OV bit earthy/rustic bit complex flavor w/ modest ripe tannins; very long strong plummy/licorice/Aglianico/blackberry fairly dusty/OV bit complex finish w/ modest tannins; almost Calif in style w/o the rusticity/coarseness of many Compania reds; this is how the Terrizzis/Giornata would make Aglianico in Campania if they could. $34.00 (KK)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Aglianico is an indiginious grape to Campania. Aglianico is a grape variety that has sorta flown under my radar. I've had a few & really liked them, but it's a variety that never quite grabbed my attention.
A week ago, Steve held a tasting of Calif/Italian Aglianicos & I was quite impressed with them. So I wanted to try a few more Italian versions. I was fairly impressed by them. The wines, at least in Calif, can make a brutally tannic wine. But it has a load of fruit that suggests more Calif than Italy. It's a variety they should be planting more of in Calif. Alas, the largest planting of Aglianico at LunaMatta/PasoRobles has been pulled by the Daou operation when they bought the vnyd from the Ahners, I believe.
