- 2019 Schloss Gobelsburg Grüner Veltliner 1ÖTW Ried Renner - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal (4/14/2022)
Popped and poured, though after two hours it’s clear that a brief decant would have been a good idea.
I am a dedicated fan of Gobelsburg’s Renner Grüner Veltliner. The 2019 is another in a long string of successes. It’s brighter and fresher than the deep and brooding 2018, and has less of the unctuous character that richer GV sometime carries, but that just fine. It’s a more refreshing edition, but still has the depth of other vintages, just on a more electrically charged frame. I am used to pear and cress, where this skews more towards lemon. The finish still shows the brothy tone I expect, but it’s just an accent, rather than the dominant chord. Engaging and deeply satisfying, this is my single favorite Austrian wine year in and year out.
