A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Steve is a fan of Aglianico (for whatever reason) & decided to pull some from his cellar to try them together.
The grape appears to be a native variety in Southern Italy. Primarily in Taurasi/Campania and Aglianico del Vulture/Basilicata. It tends to produce a rather tannic & concentrated red in its youth and benefits from a few yrs of aging.
The Rymes have always been favorites of mine. They tend to be pretty big/extracted reds w lots of toasty/oak, which is atypical of Ryme wines. None of these were showing much in the way of evolution & seem to be aging at a glacial place. They may be a wine that never outlive their tannns.
Their Aglianicos come from the LunaMattaVnyd in Westside Paso of Jon&Jodi Ahner. Farmed by Steph Terrizzi, they have a lot of interesting Italian varietals in there. Alas, they recently sold their vnyd to a Daou Wnry and it has all been ripped out and planted to Cab/Merlot, which rivals the pillaging & destruction we are currently seeing in the Ukraine. So no more Aglianico for Ryme unless they can find another source.
I was really impressed how well PietroButtita's Aglianico has evolved. Upon release, I found it to be a rather underwhelming pretty (just that) expression of Aglianico, not particularly big & extracted. It has developed into a really lovely expression of mature Aglianico that the Italians would love to make of theirs.
My favorite was the BryanHarrington Aglianico. It was the most complex & restrained of the Aglianicos yet still showed a bit to the Aglianico rugged character. An Aglianico that could only be made by the sense of restraint that a Pinot producer can bring to the table. A beautiful Aglianico. Would like to know where those grapes are now going.
I was fairly impressed by all the Aglianicos. It's a variety they should be planting all up&down the Coast of Calif. I've climbed aboard Steve's Aglianico bandwagon.

I envy you this tasting. I own exactly two bottles of this grape. Love virtually every one I ever have (I even enjoy the cheap $13 ones from Terra Dora, or whatever their name is). Never had a west coaster, they sound very interesting especially the Harrington.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
