Assyrtiko

by John F » Thu Mar 24, 2022 6:39 am

Was watching a PBS cooking show on Greek foods last week and the chef was drinking some “famous” assyrtiko white wine. Sounded like a very minerally, crisp wine from a volcanic soil. Any one know any more about it?

Thanks

I really like Assyrtiko, at least from Santorini. I've had a couple of mainland Assyrtiko that were much less impressive.
Usually I buy the Sigalas, which until recently was a great buy at $20, has been edging up.
I've had a couple of bottles of Hatzidakis "Cuvee 15:, which were impressivein a Pepiere Clisson kind of way, but it's like $60 and I don't think a value (since I can buy Clisson for under $30)
Good ones are crisp, minerally,. taut.

Assyrtiko from Santorini is indeed lovely. Santorini is one of those places never reached by phylloxera so the vines are ungrafted. It's hard to find Santorini wines around here, unfortunately.

Generally I'd agree.

But for those who have access to Aldi supermarkets, they sell a good one from Amyndeon very cheaply - £7.00 in the UK. I'd say it compares well with low-end Santorini wines, but for a fraction (1/3?) of the price.
