WTN: d'Arenberg "The Stump Jump" white 2005

McLaren Vale.

A blend of Riesling (63 per cent), Sauvignon Blanc (20), Marsanne (10) and Roussanne (7).

A bit of petrol on the nose.

When first taken out of the fridge (and quite cold) the wine was very simple, featuring intense lemon and grapefruit peel. With time and, perhaps more importantly, warming, the wine began to broaden out a bit, showing some creaminess and losing some of the razor-like intensity of the lemon and grapefruit. Also showing some peppery character and, if you look hard enough, a bit of grassiness.

Mouthwatering finish, with some creaminess.

Yup, have had many vintages of both the red and the white Stump Jump. Good, simple, easy going wines, for very good prices.

Bruce, obviously this was a better wine than I would have thought it to be. I really can NOT fathom blending riesling with these other wines. Why?

This vintage is "okay", but I have liked other vintages better. I must admit that I am a sucker for "non-traditional" blends. Doesn't work all the time, but when it does, it makes for an interesting experience.
