WTN: Three PinotNoirs...short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Mar 10, 2022 2:03 pm

We had in our tasting last night:
1. Ridge Corralitos PinotNoir GaliVnyd/SantaCruzCnty (13.8%; bttld: Dec 2019; Drk: 10/19-1024: EB) 2018: Med.light color; somewhat earthy/dusty slight cherry/PN light (for a Ridge) vanilla/oak rather simple nose; lightly tangy some earthy/dusty/loamy slight cherry/PN/black cherry bit vanilla/oak somewhat rough/rustic flavor w/ light bitey tannins; med.long light cherry/PN some earthy/dusty/loamy bit vanilla/oak finish; very unRidge-like in character; pretty unthrilling expression of PN of the level of a simple village RedBurg; not a whole lot of fruit here.

2. Dom.Michel Magnien AC: Cote de Nuits Villages Broshon GrandVin de Bourgogne (13%; www.Michel-Magnien.com; WinebowImprts/NY) Morey St.Denis 2018: Med.color fairly earthy/dusty slight PN/black cherry slight toasty/oak bit rustic not very Burgundian nose; rather tart rather earthy/dusty/bit loamy slight black cherry/PN rather rustic flavor w/ some rough coarse tannins; med.long mostly earthy/dusty/loamy/bit mushroomy very slight black cherry/PN rather rustic finish w/ light rough tannins; a paucity of PN fruit & little Burgundian character; very overpriced even for RedBurg. $51.00 (KK)

3. Juggernaut PinotNoir RRV (14.5%; "Harnessing the Power of Nature"; www.JuggernautWines.com) BogleVnyds/Clarksburg 2019: Dark color; some earthy/dusty very slight PN/black cherry some toasty/oak rather dull bit vapid nose; strong vanilla/Am.oak fairly earthy/dusty very slight black cherry/PN some vanilla/oak flavor w/ light coarse tannins; med. fairly earthy/dusty very slight black cherry/PN finish w/ light coarse tannins; speaks not a whit of RRV PN; fairly dull PN in the Bogle style; overpriced at $22.00 (KK)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. A pretty dull trio of PinotNoirs. The basic Siduri SonomaCnty PN would be far better than these three. Probably even a TraderJoe's basic PN would have at least some PN fruit to it. The Ridge was easily the best but nothing to write home about.

Rustic, loamy and earthy with coarse tannin sounds like Morey St. Denis.

Ugh, Juggernaut. Their cab has been pushed heavily at a local Italian-ish restaurant as their "best seller" which dopes a lot of unsophisticated wine drinkers into thinking "it's gotta be good!" and buying it by the case. It's pretty industrial/awful.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

"Juggernaut PinotNoir RRV (14.5%; "Harnessing the Power of Nature"; www.JuggernautWines.com) BogleVnyds/Clarksburg 2019"
Waitaminnit! RRV means "Russian River Valley", right? And Clarksburg is in the San Joaquin Delta, right? Dry Creek gets their Chenin Blanc (good wine, too) from there.
So is this stuff RRV or Contra Costa County?
Not that it matters; I'm not going to rush over to Bottle Barn to find some, based on your opinion.

John,
The grapes are RRV Pinot. I presume the wine is made at Bogle in Clarksburg. They also make a NapaVlly Cab under that same label that I'm not inclined to try.
But there are some good wines that come from ContraCosta/Clarksburg grapes. Some... but not a lot.

"made at Bogle in Clarksburg" AH! Sorry, I misread your compact (and traditional) post. Sometimes I lose track.
