2020 Weingut Weszeli Langenlois Gruner Veltiner Terrafactum, Austria.
Consumed same afternoon an Austrian won the Honda Classic! 12.5% alc, $28 Cda, SC, new arrival on the shelves downtown.
Clear light straw color, nose had pea shoots, yellow stonefruit. Sure took a while to open up, dry, concentrated, nice acidity and fruit balance. Finish is a big plus with white pepper, minerals and red apple.
Tasters should not serve this GV too cold imo. Nice with smoked jalapeno wings.
2017 Villa Matilde Falerno del Massico, Campania.
Cellared for 3 yrs, 100% Falanghina, good nat cork, 13% alc. $30 Cda.
Very nice aromatics after an hour with ripe fruits, pineapple, banana, pear and peach. Oh, color was a medium greenish yellow. Initial entry thought was hint of almonds, nicely balanced and velvety. Perfect acidity, long finish. Think I should have opened a year back maybe?
Why is Falanghina so hard to find in my area these days?
2019 Neil Ellis Groenekloof Syrah, S Africa.
Entry level, only $24 Cda! Good natural cork, 14% alc. Huge meaty nose-totally, thought I should decant this. Lots of conversation around the dinner table with BBQ Beef Ribs, panfried pots and mushroom sauce. Over all>>>>"kirsch/blackberry/dark/peperary/cassis/pure fruit/no oak/ripe tannins/globs of fruit".
Will go back for more no doubt about it, look for it in your area.
2020 Weinhaus Ress Pinot Noir, Rheingau.
Short notes, light and juicy PN, red fruit flavors and some delicate spice notes. All backed up with elegance, modern German take on Pinot Noir.
