WTN: A Forlorn-Hope White & Two Reds '16...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Feb 01, 2022 3:39 pm

Working further into my F-H stash, I tried last night:
1. King-Andrews WW King-AndrewsVnyd/SuisanVlly (12.48%; 47 cs) 2016: Light gold color; somewhat chalky/stony/mineral some floral/musky/hollyhocks/marigolds/bit pungent quite fragrant pertty/interesting nose; rather tart/tangy fairly strong chalky/stony lightly floral/hollyhocks/marigolds/pungent slight buttery quite pretty flavor; long some chalky/stony lightly tart bit metallic/tangy some floral/marigolds/hollyhocks/pungent finish; quite a pretty white w/ nice balance of chalky & floral.

2. Forlorn-Hope Trousseau RorickVnyd/CalaverasCnty (12.29%; 52 cs) 2016: Very light salmon/copper/near rose color; quite pretty very fragrant/floral/rose petal/violets almost Nebb-like/Brachetto-like light earthy/dusty very perfumed nose; fairly tart/tangy very strong floral/rose petal/violets some earthy/dusty bit complex lovely/frivolous flavor w/ light tannins; very long slightly tart/tangy very perfumed Trousseau/floral/rose petal/violets slight earthy finish w/ light tannic bite; a really pretty perfumed light frivolous/glou-glou rose wine sorta in the style of a Schiava from the AltoAdige; a really lovely Vin de Soif.

3. Forlorn-Hope C/Ghost Mondeuse RorickVnyd/CalaverasCnty (12.40%; 52 cs) Murphys 2016: Dark color w/ slight bricking; strong herbal/spicy/rosemary/thyme/forest floor/classic Mondeuse bit earthy rather aromatic nose; rather tart/tangy very strong Mondeuse/forest floor/thyme/rosemary/spicy/herbal fairly earthy rather rustic flavor w/ ample hard/rough tannins; very long quite tart/tangy tight/hard/rough/rustic strong herbal/rosemary/thyme/classic Mondeuse finish w/ ample hard tannins; a pretty classic expression of herbal/Mondeuse but rather on the hard/tannic side; not the richness/lushness of Lagier-Meredith; still needs age to soften the tannins.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Not sure what all is in this white blend. I think this comes from Roger King's White Heritage block, which contains a bunch of old-timey white varieties, including some GreenHungarian from the LibraryVnyd in St.Helena that he planted for MattRorick. Shades of FredWeibel!!
Trousseau or TrousseauNoir is an old variety originating in Eastern France. Also known as Bastardo in Portugal. It is mostly found in the red wines from Jura. In Calif, it is mostly used to make fortified Port-like dessert wines. I don't recall any other Trousseau from Calif made in this style. Stolpman makes a Trousseau that resembles those from the Jura more than anything. Quite a lovely Vin de Soif. We need more wines like this.

Wineries to visit in Sonoma?

by Jenise » Sun Feb 06, 2022 2:50 pm

We're probably going wine tasting in Sonoma later this Spring, and here are a few of the wineries that have popped up as potential tasting opps. Trying for the the smaller, lesser known places--no trophy wines. I know Pax's syrah. Love Anthill Farms. Carlisle's my favorite zin producer, so no brainer there. Ryme seems interesting, I've seen notes here. I don't know the others. Thoughts on any of these?

Aeris by Rhys-Healdsburg: Italian Varietals
Anthill Farms for pinot, chardonnay and syrah
Pax-Great Syrah, Chenin, Grenache
Carlisle- Zin, Syrah, Field Blend, all old vines
Ryme-Fairly Hipster but good, Ribolla, Cab Franc, Aglianico
Trombetta-Very small, down home Pinot and Chardonnay excellent
Acorn-nice people very good wines.
DRNK
Fog Crest
Furthermore
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Jenise,
I would indorse all of these. In addition, Idlewild has a tasting room just of the square in Healdsburg that's
worth visiting. Also, over in Occidental, I would suggest visiting the Boheme tasting room.

Idlewild for sure (this list was compiled by others). And I'll look into Boheme, thanks. New to me.
